Saturday, March 30 | Hockey, Welding, & Ice Cream: A Love Story
A Reading Featuring the Work of Thax Douglas, Al Johnson’s Final Flu, & Ryan Werner
Eronel Art + Music Venue, 285 Main Street, will host a night of words; “Hockey, Welding, & Ice Cream: A Love Story” on Saturday, March 30, 7-9 p.m. featuring original work from writers Thax Douglas, Al Johnson, & Ryan Werner. The reading serves as a fundraiser for DubuqueFest Fine Arts Festival. Thax Douglas is an American rock poet who was a long-time fixture at Chicago-area shows reading original work inspired by the music of the bands he was introducing. His self-published work includes several collections of poetry. Al Johnson pushed the boundaries and destroyed the rules of rock as founder and frontman of the band U.S. Maple. Al Johnson’s Final Flu is now pushing boundaries in the field of writing as a contributor to Vice as well as his website, AlJohnsonisDecent.com. Local fiction writer and rocker Ryan Werner‘s short story collection Shake Away These Constant Days was recently published by Jersey Devil Press. His work is quirky, world-wise, and as joyfully rambunctious as your favorite punk rock song. Meet the writers, enjoy the reading, and buy their books. DubuqueFest t-shirts and signed, limited edition silk-screened posters by artist Rich Rossignol will be available for purchase. A Sliding scale donation of $5-$10 is suggested. All proceeds from the door support DubuqueFest.
Friday, April 19 | Emerging Artist Showcase
Nash Gallery, 371 Bluff Street in Cable Car Square, will host an emerging artist showcase exhibit and reception on Friday, April 19 from 7-9 p.m. This multi-genre exhibit features the work of nine emerging artists from the art departments of Clarke University and Loras College. Featured artists include Sara Steuer, Kalli Olberding, Randi Westervelt, Samantha Sewell and Mark Fuentebella from Clarke University and Emily Cram, Traci Bauer, Gwen Gross, and Kayla Carlson from Loras College. The artists’ work include explorations in photography, installation, collage, mixed media/conceptual, painting, illustration, drawing, ceramics, and sculpture.
The exhibit and opening reception serves as a fundraiser for DubuqueFest Fine Arts Festival 36th annual all-arts festival scheduled for May 17-19 in downtown Dubuque. The artists will donate 10% of all sales made on opening night to the festival. DubuqueFest t-shirts and signed, limited edition silk-screened posters by artist Rich Rossignol will be available for purchase. The public is invited to attend. Refreshments and treats will be served. A $10 donation is suggested for adults and $5 for students who show their current college ID. Mindframe Theatres, 555 JFK Road, in Dubuque sponsors DubuqueFest Fine Arts Festival’s “An Evening with William Ellittot Whitmore.” Iowa native, Will Whitmore has graced the stages of DubuqueFest over the years and has become a banjo plucking savior to music lovers across the world. With a voice that sounds like the reincarnation of an old gospel preacher from the 1920s and a fascination with sin, death, and redemption to match, William Elliott Whitmore is one of the most unique artists to emerge on the Americana scene in years. Whitmore will offer a one-man performance on the Mindframe stage. This concert serves as a fundraiser for DubuqueFest Fine Arts Festival annual all-arts festival scheduled for May 17-19, 2013. DubuqueFest t-shirts and signed, limited edition silk-screened posters by artist Rich Rossignol will be available for purchase. Raffle tickets will be for sale for chances to win a variety of artful prizes. Tickets are $20 and include 1 free raffle ticket.
